Your Home: The Scents of the Season
Posted on November 22, 2020 by Laura LuckyNo matter what holiday you celebrate or how much effort you put into this time of the year, pretty much everyone enjoys the traditional holiday scents and aromas filling your home with good cheer. We thought we’d share a few very simple ways to infuse your home or office with the smells of the season. May your holidays be filled with love, laughter, and contentment!
Stove-Top Simmer Pots
Make your own blend of potpourri and set it to a low simmer on the stove. Whether your base is water or apple cider, you can choose your blend of ingredients. As the hours go on, be sure to check the liquid level frequently and add more as it evaporates. Try these recipes or design your own!
- Apple slices, orange peels, cloves, and cinnamon sticks
- Thick fresh citrus slices, sprigs of rosemary, and fresh balsam
- Pine cuttings, cinnamon sticks, and peppermint sticks
- Rosemary, thyme, and sage
Pomades
You may remember making these little crafts in elementary school. They are a traditional holiday decoration hailing from Victorian times that also serve as a wonderful-smelling addition to your home. Simply stud whole, fresh oranges with whole cloves. Spray with cinnamon-scented essential oil, allow them to cure, and they’ll last for years to come!
Scented Pinecones
Yes, these are available in almost any store this time of the year, but there’s a big difference between the chemically treated, artificial scent versus what you can create with homemade. Simply wash and dry the pinecones and spray liberally with essential oils such as cinnamon, apple, orange, or nutmeg. Seal tightly in a plastic bag for 24 hours then allow them to airdry. Voila!
